Environmental Diplomacy Short Course
On 24-25 April, the Institute for Global Dialogue offered an advanced short training course in environmental negotiations diplomacy to a carefully selected group of middle-level government officials from Angola, DRC, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Western Sahara, South Africa, and Zimbabwe as well as delegates from civil society involved in climate change advocacy. The government officials selected were those involved or about to participate in multilateral negotiations. Designed to help enhance Africa's capacity to negotiate favorably, the course was conducted by experienced diplomats and negotiations trainers: Ron Ton, the director of the Clingendael Academy in The Netherlands and Ambassador John Tesha, the retired Tanzanian diplomat and former OAU senior staffer. The course sought to balance deeper insights into the complexity of international negotiations with personal skills training in negotiation skills. The IGD will soon unveil more tailor-made short courses designed to contribute to a more efficient negotiations diplomacy on the part of African countries. They can also be used as a form of a refresher course for practicing negotiators. The support of the Government of Norway in this regard is highly appreciated
