Sustainable Development GoalsAt the end of September 2015, the United Nations are launching a fresh set of global goals for sustainable development, a series of ambitious targets to end poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, and tackle global challenges like climate change by 2030.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs or Global Goals) along with 169 specific targets were set building on the experience of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), aiming to revitalise and galvanise action globally over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.

Global sustainable development leaders confirmedSome of the world’s most respected leaders in sustainable development are confirmed to speak at the second Eye on Earth Summit, taking place from 6 to 8 October in Abu Dhabi.

The Sustainable Development Goals for Children

The Sustainable Development Goals for ChildrenIn four short months the Millenium Development Goals will be history and the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals will take their place as the global development challenge for the next 15 years.

After the years-long political process called Post-2015, Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was released in July. At the United Nations Summit in New York next month, 193 of the world's leaders will endorse the landmark document, committing to work together to meet its targets over the next 15 years.

About The Project

Supported by the Department for International Development (DFID) UK, this 3 year project focuses on deepening the understanding of the international politics of development diplomacy, including the key political drivers that influence and shape development policy internationally and the impact this has on South Africa as an emerging development assistance partner.

Key Themes

This project considers three key areas:

  1. The development of the South African Development Partnership Agency (SADPA);
  2. Trilateral development partnerships; and
  3. Multilateral development cooperation.
Aims and Objectives of The Project

The aims of this project include:

  • improving the understanding of the current transition taking place within multilateral development cooperation in both the geo-political North and South;
  • understanding the role of multilateral development cooperation for South Africa’s foreign policy and international engagement in the short, medium, and long-term;
  • review potential opportunities as well as obstacles in engaging in international development assistance
