From MDGs to Sustainable Development Goals: The Travails of International Development

Date: 27 January 2018
Time: 17:00
Venue: Andenbuch, Bergemannstr. 59 10961 Berlin

The United Nations (UN) set in motion a number of international efforts to place people’s development at the center of the international system, beginning with the declaration of the 1960s as the Development Decade and culminating in the adoption of the Millennium Declaration in 2000, from which the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were drawn. Fifteen years later, world governments decided to further strengthen this pursuit of development by adopting 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This book gives us a good sense of how to understand this fifteen year period of MDGs and what implications this will have on the implementation of the SDGs. It thus presents a powerful blend of thinking from various disciplines and scholars of various ages, and is a positive step towards expanding transdisciplinary spaces for understanding our world and how we might solve its problems. Dr. Philani Mthembu, co-editor and Executive Director, Institute for Global Dialogue, based in Pretoria, South Africa will lead the discussion on the transition from the MDGs to the SDGs, and copies of the book will be made available.
