South Africa’s international agenda for 2018 presents a number of strategically important events. The roundtable scopes out South Africa’s 2018 foreign policy agenda amidst the transition of ANC leadership and the road to the 2019 national elections. South Africa’s foreign policy pivots on its commitments to Africa, which has experienced significant changes in the geopolitical landscape, South-South cooperation and other global engagement. This year will thus see South Africa’s Chairship of the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) partnership and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), its involvement in the G20 summit, Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), as well as the continued pursuit of a developmental African and global South agenda. This roundtable will explore South Africa’s foreign policy interactions during the course of the year and looking towards possible projections for 2019.
