Over the last 11 years the BRICS agenda has rapidly expanded to include a wide array of cooperating and interlinking sectors. As the BRICS partners, and the world, looked to Brazil’s Chairing of the 11th Summit from 13-14 November 2019, the discussions focused on the main theme of ‘Economic Growth for an Innovative Future’. This half day symposium will reflect on Brazil’s key priorities: strengthening cooperation in Science, technology and innovation; enhancing cooperation on digital economy; invigorating cooperation on the fight against transnational crime, especially organized crime, money laundering and drug trafficking; and encouraging a harmonized working relationship between the New Development Bank (NDB) and the BRICS Business Council. Brazil has urged its BRICS partners to take more agency in communicating the work of BRICS with their own regional outreach spheres. As Brazil hands over the presidency to Russia for the 2020 chairship, the BRICS stand at a synergistic moment with its Africa regional outreach, where Russia has revitalised its cooperation efforts in Africa with its Russia-Africa summit hosted in October 2019.
